Is Bhutan expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Yes, Bhutan is one of the most expensive countries in Asia to visit, mainly because of the Sustainable Development Fee of US$100 per person per night, plus a visa fee of about US$40. On top of that, a budget trip costs about US$115 per person per day, mid-range about US$215 and comfort about US$800. Food and local prices are modest; the fee, the guide and the vehicle are what you pay for.

Where the money goes
Most visitors book through a licensed tour operator, and the daily price bundles a guide, a driver and vehicle, hotel and usually all meals. Transport is a surprisingly large slice, about US$40-60 a day even on a budget, because you travel by private car with a driver. The Sustainable Development Fee is paid on top, for every night. Entrance fees to dzongs, temples and museums now add a few dollars each, while meals in local restaurants and handicrafts are reasonably priced.
When it is cheaper
Operators often discount the monsoon months of June to August and the cold months of December to February, when hotels are quieter; the fee itself does not change. Spring and autumn festival dates are the most expensive and book up first.
How to spend less
- Compare quotes from several licensed operators; prices for the same route vary.
- Travel in a small group to share the cost of the guide and vehicle.
- Ask whether site entry fees are already included in your package.
- Choose certified 3-star hotels rather than luxury lodges; the fee is the same either way.
- Consider the shoulder months of late November or early March for lower hotel rates and clear weather.
- Check current rules on fee reductions for children and for longer stays, which the government has changed in recent years.
