North of Speightstown, Port St. Charles is a modern marina, while inland the parish holds some of the island's best-known sights: St. Nicholas Abbey, a seventeenth-century Jacobean plantation house with its own rum distillery and heritage railway, Farley Hill National Park with its romantic ruined mansion, and the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, where green monkeys roam freely. At the island's northern tip, the Animal Flower Cave opens onto the Atlantic. Local food means fish cakes, flying fish and cou-cou. The dry season from December to May is the best time to visit.
