It sits at the edge of Abisko National Park, founded in 1909 and one of the first national parks in Europe. In summer the sun does not set from late May to mid-July, and the park becomes a hiking area: Abisko is the northern start of the Kungsleden, the King's Trail, and an easy path follows the Abiskojåkka canyon from the village. The U-shaped valley of Lapporten, a symbol of Lapland, is visible from many points. Abisko is on the railway line between Kiruna and Narvik, so you can arrive by train. The best time to visit is February to March for the aurora and June to September for hiking.
