Why visit Zhangjiajie?

Zhangjiajie, in Hunan province, is known for the tall sandstone pillars of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose misty peaks are often said to have inspired the floating mountains in the film Avatar. It is one of China's most spectacular natural landscapes.

Inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, walk among the pillars of Yuanjiajie, ride the Bailong Elevator, a glass lift built on the cliff, and follow the Golden Whip Stream along the valley floor. Tianzi Mountain has wide viewpoints over the peaks. Near the city, Tianmen Mountain is reached by one of the world's longest cable cars and has glass skywalks along the cliff, the road with 99 bends and the natural arch of Tianmen Cave. The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge crosses a deep gorge. Plan at least two days for the main park, and come early to beat the crowds. Hunan food is spicy: try smoked pork, sour fish and local mushrooms.
