Why visit Whitsundays?

The Whitsundays are a group of 74 islands off the coast of Queensland, Australia, in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Most of them are national park, with forested hills, quiet bays and some of the whitest sand in the world at Whitehaven Beach.

Whitehaven Beach, on Whitsunday Island, has seven kilometres of pure silica sand, and the Hill Inlet lookout gives the famous view of sand and water swirling at low tide. Sail, take a day cruise or join an overnight boat trip around the islands, and snorkel or dive on fringing reefs and at the outer Great Barrier Reef, including Heart Reef, best seen from a scenic flight. Airlie Beach on the mainland is the lively base, with a lagoon pool, bars and tour operators, while Hamilton Island has resorts, an airport and golf buggies instead of cars. Stinger suits are recommended for swimming in the warmer months. Try fresh seafood and tropical fruit.
