Why visit Uluru?

Uluru is a huge sandstone monolith in the red centre of Australia, in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its nature and its culture. It is sacred to the Aṉangu, the Aboriginal traditional owners, and changes colour dramatically at sunrise and sunset.

Walk the base of Uluru, about ten kilometres, with stops at waterholes and rock art, or join a ranger-guided walk to learn its stories. Climbing Uluru has been permanently banned since 2019 out of respect for its traditional owners. Watch sunrise and sunset from the dedicated viewing areas. Kata Tjuta, a group of domed rocks about 40 kilometres away, has the Valley of the Winds walk. The Field of Light art installation lights up the desert at night, and the night sky is superb. The Cultural Centre explains Aṉangu law and culture. Accommodation is in Yulara, the resort village near the park. Try bush-tucker flavours such as wattleseed and quandong.
