Why visit Ulaanbaatar?

Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia and home to nearly half of the country's people. It is a busy, fast-changing city set in a valley among grassy hills, and it is the starting point for trips into the steppe, the Gobi Desert and the mountains.

Sukhbaatar Square, also called Chinggis Square, is lined by the Government Palace with a large statue of Chinggis Khaan. Visit the Gandan Monastery, Mongolia's main Buddhist monastery, with a tall statue of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, and the Choijin Lama Temple Museum. The Chinggis Khaan National Museum tells the history of the Mongol Empire. Climb to the Zaisan Memorial for a view over the city. Out of town, the Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue is a giant stainless-steel figure on horseback, and Gorkhi-Terelj National Park has rock formations, ger camps and horse riding. The Naadam festival in July features wrestling, horse racing and archery. Try buuz dumplings, khuushuur and airag.
