Why visit Swakopmund?

Swakopmund is a seaside town on the Atlantic coast of Namibia, where the Namib Desert meets the ocean. Founded in the German colonial era, it keeps a striking collection of German architecture, from the Woermann House to the old railway station, and often sits under a cool sea fog.

It is Namibia's adventure capital. Sandboarding and quad-biking on the dunes, skydiving over the desert and the sea, and the Living Desert Tour, which reveals the small creatures hidden in the dunes, are all popular. At nearby Walvis Bay, boat trips meet seals, dolphins and pelicans, and flamingos gather in the lagoon. Sandwich Harbour, where giant dunes drop straight into the ocean, is reached by 4x4. The Moon Landscape and ancient Welwitschia plants lie inland, and the Skeleton Coast, with its shipwrecks and Cape Cross seal colony, stretches north. Swakopmund also has good restaurants serving fresh oysters and seafood.
