Why visit Sochi?

Sochi is a long resort city on Russia's Black Sea coast, stretching along the shore with the green slopes of the Caucasus Mountains rising behind it. It has a mild, humid subtropical climate, with palm trees and warm summers, which has made it one of the most popular holiday places in Russia. In 2014 it hosted the Winter Olympic Games.

In summer, people come for the pebble beaches and the seafront promenade, the Arboretum with its subtropical gardens, and the forests of Sochi National Park, with waterfalls, gorges and walking trails. Up in the mountains, Krasnaya Polyana is a ski area that was developed for the Olympics, and its cable cars also run in summer for hiking and wide views. Near the sea in Adler, the Olympic Park holds the former Olympic venues and the Sochi Autodrom racing circuit. You can also visit Stalin's former summer dacha and tea plantations in the green hills. Sochi has an international airport in Adler and train links to other Russian cities. The best time is June to September for the beach and December to March for skiing. Before you travel, check your government's current travel advice and visa rules, and note that foreign Visa and Mastercard cards do not work in Russia.
