Why visit Sighisoara?

Sighișoara in Transylvania is one of the best-preserved inhabited medieval citadels in Europe and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by Saxon colonists, its hilltop old town is still enclosed by walls and towers that were once maintained by the city's craft guilds.

The Clock Tower, rising over the main gate, houses a history museum and gives sweeping views over the coloured rooftops. Nearby is the house where Vlad III, the prince who inspired the Dracula legend, is said to have been born. Climb the covered wooden Scholars' Stairway to the Church on the Hill and its old cemetery, and wander the cobbled lanes and the square where the medieval festival is held each summer. Sighișoara is also a good base for the fortified Saxon churches of the surrounding villages, such as Biertan, and lies between Brașov and Sibiu. Eat hearty Romanian food: sarmale, ciorbă soups and papanași for dessert.
