Why visit Sarlat?

Sarlat-la-Canéda is the capital of the Périgord Noir in the Dordogne valley and one of the best-preserved medieval towns in France. Its honey-coloured stone houses, Gothic and Renaissance mansions and stone-roofed buildings have changed little in centuries, and the centre is often used as a film set.

Wander from the Cathedral of Saint-Sacerdos to the Lantern of the Dead, the house of the writer La Boétie, and the Place de la Liberté. The Saturday market fills the old town with walnuts, cheeses, truffles in season, and duck and goose products, especially foie gras and confit, which are the region's specialities. The Dordogne valley around Sarlat is full of highlights: the cliff villages of La Roque-Gageac and Beynac, the castles of Castelnaud and Beynac, the hanging gardens of Marqueyssac, and canoe trips along the river. The prehistoric caves of the Vézère valley, including Lascaux IV, are within easy reach.
