Why visit Quba?

Quba is a green market town in northeastern Azerbaijan, set in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus about three hours' drive north of Baku. Surrounded by apple orchards and forested hills, it is known across the country for its fruit, its cool summer air and its traditional Quba carpets, and it makes a relaxed base for exploring some of the most remote mountain villages in the Caucasus.

Across the river from the town centre lies Qırmızı Qəsəbə, the Red Village, one of the largest communities of Mountain Jews in the world, with historic synagogues, brick houses and a small museum telling its story. In Quba itself, the nineteenth-century Juma Mosque, local tea houses and the bazaar are easy to explore on foot. The great excursion from Quba is the winding mountain road to Khinalug, a stone village at more than 2,000 metres that is among the highest inhabited villages in the Caucasus and has its own ancient language. The neighbouring Qusar district is home to the Shahdag mountain resort, with skiing in winter and hiking and cable cars in summer. Quba is at its best from May to September, when the orchards are green and the mountain roads are open.
