Why visit Punta del Este?

Punta del Este is a resort city on a narrow peninsula in Maldonado Department, southeastern Uruguay. It sits where the waters of the Rio de la Plata meet the Atlantic Ocean. In the southern summer it becomes one of the busiest beach destinations in South America.

The peninsula has two very different shores: the calm Playa Mansa on the bay side and the surf of Playa Brava facing the open ocean. On Playa Brava, the giant hand sculpture known as Los Dedos is the city's best-known landmark. Fishermen clean their catch at the port, where sea lions often gather to wait for scraps. Boats from the harbour visit Isla Gorriti, and Isla de Lobos offshore is home to a large sea lion colony. West of the city, Casapueblo is the white, Mediterranean-style building created by artist Carlos Paez Vilaro at Punta Ballena. To the east, the wave-shaped bridge at La Barra leads to quieter beaches and the village of José Ignacio. Grilled meat and fresh fish dominate local menus, and the nightlife is liveliest in January.
