Why visit Pecs?
Pécs is a lively university city in southern Hungary, set on the slopes of the Mecsek hills. It has one of the mildest, sunniest climates in the country, and its long history shows on almost every street: Roman, early Christian, medieval, Ottoman and Habsburg layers sit side by side. In Roman times the town was called Sopianae, and its Early Christian Necropolis, a group of decorated burial chambers from the fourth century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that you can visit underground.
On the main square, Széchenyi tér, stands the Mosque of Pasha Qasim, built during Ottoman rule and later turned into a Catholic church, with its green dome still the symbol of the city. A short walk away is the four-towered cathedral. East of the centre, the old Zsolnay porcelain factory has become the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, with museums, workshops, cafés and the shimmering glazed ceramics the family became famous for; you will also spot Zsolnay tiles on roofs around town. Pécs is a relaxed place to eat well, and the wine villages of Villány are nearby. Direct trains run from Budapest. The best time to visit is from April to June and in September and October, when it is warm but not hot.
