Why visit Paro?

Paro is a broad, green valley in western Bhutan and, for most travellers, the first view of the country, as it is home to Bhutan's only international airport. Rice fields, traditional painted farmhouses and the Paro River fill the valley floor, while forested mountains rise on every side, making it one of the most beautiful places in the Himalayas to begin a trip.

The highlight is the hike to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest Monastery, which clings to a sheer cliff high above the valley. The walk up through pine forest takes a few hours and ends with breathtaking views of the temple buildings. In town, Rinpung Dzong is a massive seventeenth-century fortress-monastery reached by a traditional covered wooden bridge, and above it the old watchtower of Ta Dzong houses the National Museum. Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan, is said to date back to the seventh century. In spring, the Paro Tsechu festival fills the dzong courtyard with masked dances and crowds in their finest clothes. A scenic drive over the Chele La pass leads to the quiet Haa Valley. Try ema datshi, the national dish of chillies and cheese. Spring and autumn offer the clearest skies.
