Why visit Ottawa?

Ottawa is the capital of Canada, on the Ottawa River at the border between Ontario and Quebec. It is a green, bilingual city with grand government buildings, national museums and the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that becomes a famous skating rink in winter.

Visit Parliament Hill, with its Gothic Revival buildings and summer Changing of the Guard. The National Gallery of Canada, guarded by the giant spider sculpture Maman, the Canadian Museum of History across the river in Gatineau, and the Canadian War Museum are all excellent. The ByWard Market area is full of food stalls, shops, pubs and restaurants; try a BeaverTail, the local fried pastry. Walk or cycle along the Rideau Canal, which turns into the Rideau Canal Skateway in winter, and visit during Winterlude in February or the Canadian Tulip Festival in May. Gatineau Park, just across the river, offers hiking and autumn colours.
