Why visit Orkney?

Orkney is a group of islands just off the northern tip of mainland Scotland, a place of low green farmland, wide skies and sea all around. People have lived here for thousands of years, and the islands hold some of the most remarkable Neolithic sites in Europe, protected as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage Site. Later, Orkney was ruled by Norse earls, and that Viking past still shapes its place names and culture.

At Skara Brae you can walk around a stone-built village around five thousand years old, with its stone beds and dressers still in place. Nearby stand the Ring of Brodgar, a great circle of standing stones, the tall Stones of Stenness and the chambered tomb of Maeshowe. In Kirkwall, the main town, the red sandstone St Magnus Cathedral dates from the twelfth century. On a small island linked by the Churchill Barriers, the Italian Chapel was created by Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War from simple materials, and it is moving to visit. In summer you can see puffins and many other seabirds. Ferries sail from mainland Scotland, including from Scrabster and Aberdeen, and there are flights to Kirkwall. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the days are long.
