Why visit Nosy Be?

Nosy Be is an island off the north-west coast of Madagascar and the country's main beach destination, with warm, calm water, white beaches and a scent of ylang-ylang, vanilla and spices from the plantations inland. Its name means 'big island' in Malagasy.

Boat trips are the essence of a stay. Nosy Komba is home to black lemurs that come close to visitors; Nosy Tanikely is a marine reserve with clear water, reefs and turtles; and Nosy Iranja is two islets joined by a sandbank at low tide. Lokobe National Park protects the island's last primary forest, with lemurs, chameleons and boa constrictors, reached by pirogue. Mount Passot, the highest point, has views over crater lakes at sunset. Between September and December whale sharks are often seen offshore, and humpback whales pass in season. Hell-Ville, the main town, has markets and colonial buildings. Eat fresh seafood, zebu meat and dishes cooked with coconut and vanilla.
