Why visit Nimes?

Nîmes in southern France has some of the best-preserved Roman monuments anywhere. Its amphitheatre, the Arènes, is still used for concerts and events, and the Maison Carrée, a temple from around the 1st century AD, is one of the most complete Roman temples in the world; both are part of a UNESCO listing.

Opposite the Maison Carrée, the glass-and-steel Carré d'Art by Norman Foster houses a modern art museum, and the Musée de la Romanité shows the city's Roman past in a striking contemporary building facing the arena. The Jardins de la Fontaine, laid out in the 18th century around a spring, contain the Temple of Diana, and the Tour Magne on the hill above offers views across the city. The famous Pont du Gard aqueduct is 25 kilometres away and makes an essential day trip, as do Arles, Avignon, Uzès and the Camargue. Denim is said to take its name from fabric 'de Nîmes'. Try brandade de morue, the local salt-cod speciality.
