Why visit Ngorongoro?

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is in northern Tanzania, between Arusha and the Serengeti. Its centrepiece is the Ngorongoro Crater, a huge collapsed volcanic caldera with a floor full of wildlife. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most famous safari destinations.

Game drives descend the steep crater walls to the grasslands, swamps and forest patches of the crater floor. It is one of the best places in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino, along with lions, elephants, buffalo, hyenas, zebras and wildebeest. Flamingos often gather on the shallow soda lake in the crater. Maasai people live in the conservation area and graze their cattle alongside the wildlife. Nearby, Olduvai Gorge is one of the world's most important sites for the study of human origins and has a small museum. The rim of the crater, often cool and misty, offers spectacular views down into the caldera.
