Why visit Mljet?

Mljet is a long, green island in southern Dalmatia, west of Dubrovnik and south of the Pelješac peninsula. Much of the island is covered in pine and oak forest, and its western part is a national park. With only a few small villages and no big resorts, Mljet feels calm and unspoiled, and it is a favourite of people looking for nature, quiet coves and clear water rather than nightlife.

The heart of the national park is a pair of saltwater lakes, Veliko Jezero and Malo Jezero, linked to the sea by a narrow channel. You can walk or cycle the paths around them, swim in their warm water or rent a kayak. On a tiny islet in the larger lake stands the old Benedictine monastery and church of St Mary, reached by a short boat ride. The villages of Pomena and Polače are the main entry points, and at Polače you can see the remains of a Roman palace. On the east of the island, Saplunara has sandy beaches, and near Babino Polje a sea cave is linked by legend to Odysseus. Ferries and catamarans connect Mljet with Dubrovnik, and a car ferry runs from Prapratno on Pelješac. Visit from May to September.
