Why visit Malbork?
Malbork is a small town in northern Poland, on the Nogat River, and home to one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Europe. The Castle of the Teutonic Order was built by the German crusading knights from the 13th century onward, and in 1309 it became the seat of their Grand Master. Made almost entirely of red brick, it is the largest brick castle in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was badly damaged in the Second World War and has since been carefully restored.
A visit takes at least half a day, and the audio guide leads you through the whole complex. You cross moats and gates into the High Castle, the oldest part, with its cloister, chapter house and Church of the Virgin Mary, whose large Madonna figure on the outer wall has been rebuilt. The Middle Castle holds the Grand Master's Palace, with elegant vaulted halls, and there are collections of amber and armour. For the best photos, walk to the opposite bank of the Nogat and look back at the walls reflected in the water. Malbork is less than an hour by train from Gdańsk, so it is an easy day trip. The best time to visit is May to September.
