Why visit Loire Valley?

The Loire Valley in central France is a UNESCO-listed landscape of rivers, vineyards and more than a hundred châteaux, built when the French court spent much of its time here during the Renaissance. Chambord, with its double-helix staircase often linked to Leonardo da Vinci, is the largest; Chenonceau spans the River Cher on a series of arches; and Amboise, where Leonardo spent his last years at Clos Lucé, overlooks the Loire itself.

Other favourites include the gardens of Villandry, the fairy-tale towers of Ussé, Azay-le-Rideau reflected in its moat, and the royal fortress of Chinon. Towns such as Tours, Blois, Amboise and Saumur make good bases. The region is ideal for cycling: the Loire à Vélo route follows the river on quiet paths. Wine is part of every visit — Vouvray, Sancerre, Chinon and Saumur — and local food includes rillettes, goat's cheeses such as Sainte-Maure, and tarte Tatin, created in the Sologne.
