Why visit Larnaca?

Larnaca is a seaside city on the south-east coast of Cyprus and the home of the island's main international airport, which makes it an easy first stop. Its palm-lined promenade, the Finikoudes, runs along a town beach backed by cafés and restaurants.

The Church of Saint Lazarus, built in the 9th century over the tomb of the saint, has a richly carved wooden iconostasis, and the medieval fort guards the seafront. West of town, the Larnaca Salt Lake fills with flamingos in winter, and on its shore stands the Hala Sultan Tekke, one of the most important Islamic sites on the island. Divers come for the wreck of the Zenobia, a ferry that sank off the port in 1980 and is now among the best wreck dives in the Mediterranean. Mackenzie beach, near the airport, has a lively bar scene. Eat meze, halloumi and souvla, and take day trips to the lace-making village of Lefkara and to Nicosia.
