Why visit Lake Sevan?

Lake Sevan is Armenia's great inland sea, one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in Eurasia, lying about 1,900 metres above sea level in Gegharkunik Province, roughly an hour's drive northeast of Yerevan. Its deep blue water, ringed by bare mountains, makes it the country's favourite summer escape, and much of the shore is protected as Sevan National Park.

The most famous sight is Sevanavank, a ninth-century monastery of dark stone churches on a peninsula that was an island until the lake level dropped during the Soviet era. Steps lead up to the churches for sweeping views over the water. Further down the western shore, the Hayravank Monastery stands on a rocky headland, and at Noratus you can walk through a medieval cemetery holding one of the largest collections of khachkars, the carved Armenian cross-stones. In summer, beaches and small resorts around the town of Sevan fill with families from Yerevan, and the lake is cool enough for refreshing swims. Lakeside restaurants serve local fish such as Sevan trout and whitefish, often grilled or baked, along with crayfish. The best time to visit is June to September, when days are warm and sunny, although the views are beautiful in every season.
