Why visit Hermanus?

Hermanus is a seaside town on Walker Bay in South Africa's Western Cape, southeast of Cape Town. It is famous as one of the best places in the world for land-based whale watching. Between winter and spring, southern right whales come close to shore to calve and mate in the bay.

The Cliff Path runs along the rocky coastline for kilometres and is the classic way to spot whales from land. During the season, the town's whale crier traditionally announces sightings, and boat trips get closer to the animals. Inland, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is known for cool-climate wines, especially Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Fernkloof Nature Reserve has walking trails through fynbos, the unique plant life of the Cape. Grotto Beach is a long sandy beach just east of town. Nearby, Gansbaai is known for shark and marine-life boat trips, and Stony Point at Betty's Bay is home to a colony of African penguins.
