Why visit Great Ocean Road?

The Great Ocean Road is a 240-kilometre coastal road in Victoria, Australia, running west from Torquay to Allansford near Warrnambool. Built by returned soldiers after the First World War as a memorial, it is one of the world's great scenic drives, with surf beaches, rainforest and dramatic limestone stacks.

Start at Torquay, near Bells Beach, home of a famous surfing contest, then pass through Lorne and Apollo Bay, seaside towns with cafes and beaches. Look for koalas in the trees at Kennett River, and walk among tall trees and waterfalls in the Great Otway National Park, with the Otway Fly treetop walk and Cape Otway lighthouse. The highlight is the Twelve Apostles, limestone stacks rising from the Southern Ocean in Port Campbell National Park, best at sunrise or sunset, together with Loch Ard Gorge and London Arch. The road can be driven in a long day from Melbourne, but two or three days are better.
