Why visit Gordes?

Gordes is a hilltop village in the Luberon in Provence, listed among the most beautiful villages of France. Its stone houses wrap around the slopes beneath a Renaissance château, and the view of the village from the road at sunset is one of the classic images of Provence.

Wander the steep lanes, stop at the Tuesday market, and visit the château. Just outside the village is the Village des Bories, a group of dry-stone huts showing how rural Provence once lived. A few kilometres north, the Sénanque Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery still inhabited by monks, sits in a valley surrounded by lavender that blooms purple in late June and July. Gordes is a great base for touring the Luberon: Roussillon with its ochre cliffs, Ménerbes, Bonnieux and Lourmarin, and the market town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Avignon is under an hour away. Eat goat's cheese, tapenade and seasonal Provençal dishes with local Côtes du Luberon wine.
