Why visit Gondar?

Gondar is a historic city in the highlands of northern Ethiopia, north of Lake Tana. In the 17th century Emperor Fasilides made it his capital, and for about two hundred years it was the seat of Ethiopia's emperors. They left behind a unique group of stone castles and palaces, which earned the city the nickname "Camelot of Africa" and a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The royal enclosure of Fasil Ghebbi, with its towers, walls and banquet halls, is the main sight. A short ride away, Fasilides' Bath is a stone pavilion inside a large pool, filled with water each January for the colourful Timkat (Epiphany) celebrations. Do not miss Debre Berhan Selassie church, whose ceiling is covered with painted angels' faces, or the ruins of Kuskuam, built by Empress Mentewab. Gondar is also the usual starting point for the Simien Mountains National Park, another UNESCO site, where dramatic cliffs, deep valleys and high plateaus are home to gelada monkeys and the rare Walia ibex. Treks and day trips leave from the town of Debark, a few hours north. You can fly to Gondar from Addis Ababa. The best time to visit is October to March, during the dry season.
