Why visit Giverny?

Giverny is a small village in Normandy, about 75 kilometres from Paris, where Claude Monet lived from 1883 until his death in 1926. His house and gardens, now run by the Fondation Claude Monet, are one of the most visited sites in France and the place where he painted many of his most famous works.

The pink house with green shutters keeps his colourful kitchen and his collection of Japanese prints. Outside, the Clos Normand flower garden bursts with colour from spring to autumn, and through a tunnel lies the water garden with its Japanese footbridge, weeping willows and the pond of water lilies that inspired the Nymphéas series. The Musée des Impressionnismes nearby holds exhibitions on the movement, and Monet is buried in the village churchyard. The gardens are open from spring to the end of October; arrive early to avoid crowds. Trains run from Paris Saint-Lazare to Vernon, with a shuttle or bike ride to the village.
