Why visit Broome?

Broome is a relaxed tropical town on the coast of the Kimberley region in the far north of Western Australia, on the traditional lands of the Yawuru people. It grew up as a pearling port that drew divers and workers from across Asia, and that mixed history still shows in its Chinatown, its pearl shops and the Japanese cemetery. Today it is known for red earth, turquoise water and some of the most beautiful sunsets in Australia.

Cable Beach, a long stretch of white sand, is famous for camel rides at sunset. At Gantheaume Point, red cliffs drop to the sea, and dinosaur footprints can be seen in the rocks at very low tide. Between March and October, on a few nights around the full moon, the rising moon reflects on the tidal flats of Roebuck Bay to create the Staircase to the Moon. You can also watch a film under the stars at Sun Pictures, a historic open-air cinema, or visit a pearl farm. Broome is the gateway to the Kimberley, with tours to remote gorges and coastline. Most visitors fly in from Perth. The best time to visit is the dry season, from May to September, when days are warm and sunny; the wet season brings heat, humidity and storms.
