Why visit Bohinj?

Lake Bohinj is the largest permanent lake in Slovenia, set inside Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps, about half an hour beyond Lake Bled. It is quieter and wilder than Bled, with clear green water, no big hotels on the shore and mountains rising straight from the lake.

At the eastern end, the stone bridge at Ribčev Laz frames the small Church of St John the Baptist, decorated with medieval frescoes. A cable car climbs Mount Vogel for a panorama that on clear days reaches Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak. Walk or cycle to the Savica waterfall, which drops about 78 metres into a gorge, and swim, kayak or paddle-board in the lake during summer. In winter Vogel becomes a ski area. The surrounding villages keep alpine dairy traditions, and you can try Mohant cheese, local trout and štruklji. Bohinj suits hikers and anyone looking for a calm, natural base in the Alps.
