Koyasan, or Mount Kōya, is a temple town on a forested plateau in the mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, south of Osaka. It was founded in the ninth century by the monk Kūkai, also known as Kōbō Daishi, as the centre of Shingon Buddhism, and today more than a hundred temples stand in and around the small town. Koyasan is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of sacred sites and pilgrimage routes in the Kii Mountain Range.

The most memorable experience here is spending a night in a shukubo, a temple lodging, where you sleep on futons, eat shōjin ryōri, the monks' vegetarian cuisine, and can join the morning prayers. Okunoin is a vast cemetery where paths lead between moss-covered gravestones under huge cedars to the mausoleum of Kūkai, and guided night walks there are popular. Kongōbu-ji, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, has painted sliding doors and a large rock garden, while the Danjō Garan complex is crowned by the bright red Konpon Daitō pagoda. To get there, take the Nankai train from Osaka to Gokurakubashi, then the cable car and a short bus ride. Spring and autumn are lovely, and in summer the mountain air is cooler than in the cities below.
