لماذا تزور Issyk-Kul؟

Issyk-Kul is a huge mountain lake in northeast Kyrgyzstan, lying at about 1,600 metres between the snowy ranges of the Tien Shan. It is one of the largest alpine lakes in the world, and because its water is slightly salty it never freezes, which is where its name, meaning warm lake, comes from. In summer its sandy beaches fill with families, while the mountains behind offer some of the best hiking in Central Asia.

The north shore is the busier side, with resorts around Cholpon-Ata, where an open-air field of ancient petroglyphs shows ibex and hunters carved into boulders. The south shore is wilder: Skazka, the Fairy Tale Canyon, has red and orange rock formations, and the red cliffs of Jeti-Oguz rise near a valley of pastures and yurts. At the eastern end, the town of Karakol has a wooden Dungan mosque built without metal nails and a wooden Orthodox cathedral, and is the starting point for treks to the alpine lake of Ala-Kul and the hot springs of Altyn-Arashan. Try ashlan-fu, a cold, spicy noodle soup from Karakol, and beshbarmak. The best time to visit is June to September.
