Zakynthos is big enough that you will need a car, and small enough that four days give you a real sense of it. This itinerary balances beaches, villages and food without wearing you out.
Morning: You arrive at the port from Kyllini (about a one-hour crossing, €8–12 per person). In summer you are advised to book ahead. Pick up your car at the port or the airport — expect €35–60 per day depending on the season.
Afternoon: Walk around Zakynthos Town. Agios Markos square, Solomos square and the Byzantine Museum (about €3 to enter) are worth an hour of your time. Head up to Bochali for the view over the harbour, especially in the late afternoon.
Evening: Dinner in the old town. Look for the kind of place that serves skordalia, Zakynthian meat pie or salt cod. A proper meal with wine costs €15–22 per person.
Morning: Set off early for Navagio (Shipwreck Beach, near Anafonitria). You can see it from the clifftop viewing platform for free, but to reach the sand you need a boat from Porto Vromi (around €10–15 per person). It is about a 40-minute drive from town.
Afternoon: The Blue Caves — again by boat, from Agios Nikolaos, €10–12. The light inside is remarkable from May to September. Check whether the sea is calm enough for boats to enter before you set out.
Evening: Drive back through Volimes. A small village taverna with the local ladotyri cheese and a slow-cooked tomato stew. Quiet, with none of the tourist noise.
Morning: Laganas and Keri. If you visit in July or August, Laganas beach is a protected nesting zone for loggerhead turtles. You can swim, but there are rules — respect the marked nests.
Afternoon: Cape Keri: a small harbour, natural tar springs on the seabed (a rare phenomenon), and the quiet beach at Limni Keriou for a swim. From there it is about 25 minutes to Argassi.
Evening: Argassi or Tsilivi for a livelier night. Bars, fish tavernas and something for most tastes. Choose a fish place off the main road for a better price (around €20–30 per person with fish).
Morning: The interior of the island deserves half a day. Macherado, Kiliomeno, Agalas — stone villages with churches and bell towers that feel a world away from the coast. Nothing to pay: you simply drive and stop wherever it appeals.
Afternoon: Buy local produce before you leave: ladotyri cheese, anchovy fillets in oil, thyme honey. The best prices are in the small grocers of Macherado or Alykanas, not the souvenir shops by the harbour.
Evening / departure: The last ferry to Kyllini usually leaves in the late afternoon — check the schedules for Levante Ferries. If your flight is in the morning, stay in town and keep an eye on your hotel check-out time.
Location matters in Zakynthos, because the distances add up in fuel if you stay far from the places you want to see.
If you are travelling in July or August, book at least two months ahead.
A car: You will not get around without one. Buses exist but run infrequently. Quad bikes and scooters are widely rented, but the roads in the north are narrow and uneven.
When to go: June and September are the best choice. Fewer people, everything open, the sea warm. August is very full — Navagio gets crowded.
Card or cash: Larger shops take cards, but carry cash for the villages and small tavernas. There are ATMs in town and in Laganas.
